Ultra-fast Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT)

Especially in case of a clouded sky, when light intensity is changing continuously, an ultra-fast MPPT controller will improve energy harvest by up to 30% compared to PWM charge controllers and by up to 10% compared to slower MPPT controllers.

Load output

Over-discharge of the battery can be prevented by connecting all loads to the load output. The load output will disconnect the load when the battery has been discharged to a pre-set voltage. Alternatively, an intelligent battery management algorithm can be chosen: see Battery Life. The load output is short circuit proof.

Battery Life: intelligent battery management

When a solar charge controller is not able to recharge the battery to its full capacity within one day, the result is often that the battery will continually be cycled between a ‘partially charged’ state and the ‘end of discharge’ state. This mode of operation (no regular full recharge) will destroy a lead-acid battery within weeks or months. The Battery Life algorithm will monitor the state of charge of the battery and, if needed, day by day slightly increase the load disconnect level (i.e. disconnect the load earlier) until the harvested solar energy is sufficient to recharge the battery to nearly the full 100%. From that point onwards the load disconnect level will be modulated so that a nearly 100% recharge is achieved about once every week.

Questions

Question

Want to change to lithium batteries. Can I connect Hubble batteries to charger.

Answer

Hi Willem

Yes, Hubble lithium batteries can be used with the Victron SmartSolar MPPT 250/100, but there are a few important points to be aware of.

The Victron SmartSolar MPPT 250/100 is a solar charge controller, not a lithium charger with CAN control. This means it does not communicate with the battery BMS. Instead, it charges based on voltage and current settings.

To use Hubble batteries safely and correctly, you must:

  • Set the MPPT to the correct lithium charging profile (absorption voltage, float voltage, and no equalisation).

  • Ensure the battery’s internal BMS is compatible with external MPPT charging (Hubble batteries are).

  • Use a Victron inverter or battery monitor for system-level protection and state-of-charge tracking, as the MPPT alone cannot do this.

In short:

Yes, it will work, provided the MPPT is manually configured for lithium and the rest of the system provides proper battery protection and monitoring.

Question

Please help explain the difference between this unit and the Victron SmartSolar MPPT 250/100-MC4 (12/24/36/48V-100A). Thanks

Answer

Hi Daniel. The MC4 version has MC4 connectors to plug your solar cables into whereas the TR version has screw down terminals, so it's just a matter of which method you prefer.
