Under SANS 10142-1 (Edition 3.2) a protective-earth (PE) conductor that runs with a circuit up to 16 mm² must be copper and the same cross-section as the live conductor it protects. The wording is explicit – the PE must have “a nominal cross-sectional area at least equal to that of the largest phase conductor”.
So what does that mean for typical PV strings?
4 mm² PV cable → 4 mm² earth wire
6 mm² PV cable → 6 mm² earth wire
10 mm² PV cable → 10 mm² earth wire
