More info

If you have a modern version of Excel, you can download our sizing tool here and try out different combinations of load, batteries, panels etc.

Our 5kVA Off Grid kit consists of:

  • 1 x 5kVA Solar Hybrid Inverter (product link)

  •  6 x 275W Solar Tier 1 Solar Modules (product link)

  • 4 x 100Ah AGM G+ Gel Deep Cycle Solar Batteries (product link)

  • 50m x 6.0mm Solar Cable

  • DC Switch

  • MC4 Connector kit

  • Mounting Clips and channel (2 x 6m)

Please note that these kits do not include installation.

For those not overly familiar with solar power, this kit can store around 2 Units of electricity in the batteries.

This means that at night when there is no sun, you could watch a 300W TV for about 6.5 hours before the batteries went flat (300W x 6.5 hours = 1950Whrs = 1.95 Units of electricity)

OR

you could run 40 x 5W LED globes for 10 hours (5W x 40 x10 hours = 2000Whrs = 2 Units of electricity)

OR

a 2000W kettle for an hour straight (2000W * 1 hour = 2000Whrs = 2 Units of electricity) *Not sure why you would do that but who knows?*

OR

any combination of the above that adds up to 1 Unit.

During the day, the solar panels can produce up to 1,65 kW's in full sunlight (6 x 275W = 1650W). Assuming 5 full "sun hours" in a day you would produce up to 8 units of electricity. The panels will first charge the batteries and after that will add whatever power they can produce to your grid, so you will be able to run off up to 100% solar power during daylight hours, depending on weather conditions.

If you need to do more than the above you need a bigger kit or more batteries. Please contact us and we can do a quote for you.

Hallo There how are you. I would just like to now how much will you ask for this 5kva kit with instilation in alberton joburg. Thank you. Answer:
Hi Jacobus. These kits aren't designed to run suburban houses but rather for small outbuildings and off grid huts, etc. A full suburban house typically cost upwards of R 150k or from R80k for grid tie only solutions (no batteries). Having said that we have sent you a budgetary quote & further info via the email address required, so that you can get an idea of what's involved. Regards Solar Shop Support

Hi Ayabulela. This system will run everything you listed except the stove. It's not really viable to use solar PV for a stove. You would need to consider gas if you have no electricity connection. Regards Solar Shop Support

  • Asked by Clive
    on 19/02/2018
How many would I need to run a 2 bedroom holiday home completely off grid? With stove and possibly aircon Answer:
Hi Clive. It depends entirely on how often you use the air cons and the stove. Stoves are generally cheaper to replace with gas than to try and power with solar and batteries. If you used the air cons three hours a day each and the stove one hour, you would need one 5kVA kit with 16 instead of 4 batteries and 12 panels instead of 6. Regards Solar Shop Support

Hi There, I have several questions for the 5kVA kit. 1. Can I run an air con unit of maximum power input of 1.80 kWA and for 12 hours per day mainly during the day, 6.00 am to 6.00 pm. 2. A heat pump that draws 1.85 kWA and for 8 hours a day : 5.00 am to 9.00 am and then from 5.00 pm to 9.00 pm 3. My study that draws maximum of 1.1 kWA from 6.00 am to 6.00 pm. 4. Is it possible that it will work with a system that can automatically switch on and off the grid. Thanks Tony Answer:
Hi Tony, this kit will be woefully adequate for that use. You're talking almost 50 Units per day here. This kit will produce on average around 8-9 Units per day.Regards Solar Shop Support

Good day. I would like to know more about the solar systems. Can a 4 bedroom house with 2 geysers and everything else run only on solar panels? What about wind turbines? If you could give me approximate costing as i dont have any knowledge in this regard. Thanks Answer:
Hi Cassim. It is theoretically possible. However costs soon get out of hand. First step is to get solar geysers. Then go through a process of making all your appliances as energy efficient as possible. Then you can look at powering via solar electricity at a cost that is realistic. Regards Solar Shop Support

The amout if solar pannels and batteries for the following: 400w fridge (previously was an estimate) 7 x 10W LED lights (on whenever sun is down (for fishing)) A few phone and light chargers (about 3-5 2.A) Aswell as 2 car dc outputsFor a caravanHow many batteries and soloar pannes (and size) needed?Thank you Answer:
Hi Hermann. We've sent you an excel doc for you to play around with the sizing of the system. In the case of a fridge, exact watts are not going to help, since the power draw of the fridge depends on what's in it, how often it is opened, ambient temperature , state of the seals , compressor, etc. The best you can do is get an estimated overall energy use on an annual basis, which is how modern fridges are rated.Regards Solar Shop Support

  • Asked by Jabulani
    on 15/03/2018
How much I can spend on a four bedrooms house installing solar energy power that can allow me to do almost everything. Cooking, ironing, lights, swimming pool and fence as well Answer:
Hi Jabulani. In order to quote accurately, we need the following information: Each appliance you want to run on solar, the power rating of that appliance; the number of hours or minutes per day you want to use it (e.g. fridge, 24 hours a day). One does not usually attempt to do cooking with solar power as it is simply not cost-effective. If you wanted a solution for everything in the house you are looking at several hundred thousand rands. In short everything except the washing machine and fridge and freezer. This can be added later. My idea is to link this system to the DB and connect the lights and one plug breaker. • Asked by Zameka
    on 12/04/2018
Can a solar be used to light refrigeration as well as stove and television set same time? How long a solar can work when there is no sunlight? Answer:
Hi Zameka. In short, the solar panels produce DC electricity which is used to charge batteries. The power stored in the batteries can then be used to run household appliances. Generally you need a machine called an inverter to do this. It takes the DC electricity stored i the batteries and converts it to AC electricity that can be used in the house, The appliances will continue to work as long as there is power in the batteries. So how long it will work will depend on how many batteries you have installed. Regards Solar SHop Support

Hi, could you please assist me with a quote for an off the grid system for a medium sized house. The house has 4 bedrooms, with the usual house appliances - 3 x TVs, Fridge, Washing machine, Stove, Decoder, DVD player, microwave, kettle. Do you also stock solar pumps for a borehole and swimming pool. We urgently need to get off the grid Answer:
Hi Jane. You can run your borehole and swimming pool pump off your main off-grid system. Not so stoves and kettles. It is simply not economical or practical to power these items with solar electricity. We will send you a quote for a system based on that. Regards Solar Shop Support

Hello.Firstly I would like to apologize in advance if I am posting a question that has already been answered, but after checking about 3/4 of the questions already answered and not finding any relevant topic I thought it was highly likely that this particular one had not been posted.I would like to know if you guys are aware of any rebate system offered by our current service providers i.e. ethekwini electricity, as stated on this page (http://www.durban.gov.za/City_Services/electricity/Generation/Pages/default.aspx and illustrated on this one http://www.durban.gov.za/City_Services/electricity/Generation/Pages/Tariff-Details.aspx) and if so does you prizing take these into consideration and how do I as a customer looking to purchase a grid tied system benefit from your prizing structures. Answer:
Hi Njabulo. Municipal rebate system applies to grid tie solar systems only. The rebate is between you and the municipality and doesn't affect the cost of the system you buy. Effectively, they will credit you an amount for each Unit of electricity that is fed onto the municipal grid from your system. (Please see here to see how the grid tie solutions work: http://www.iet-solar.co.za/homeownersguide/ ) . Regards Solar Shop Support

I've been reading a lot of questions from your questionnaire box below. frankly i just want to know, which option will run the whole house hold and maybe even sell power back to the grid. I hear that is possible?? As from today i'm going to more or less precisely calculate how much we use as a family in Kw when purchasing from the municipality for the month. But maintaining the house 1st without having to buy power from eskom is my main priority then we'll see about extras and selling back power n what not...Please send me 3 quotes with which you think my best options will be. Thank youFrom Lungelo Answer:
Hi Lungelo. An accurate quote can only be produced by specifying exactly what you need to be powered and where you are located in the country. Averages don't work in the solar game as this will usually result in no power at all for some of the time. Each system needs to be bespoke. Try downloading the sizing sheet on this page to get an idea of the costs for you. Regards Solar Shop Support.

2 units at ESKOM will cost about R 0.80. Based on my requirements which are: 5 X 10 Watts light for 24 hours, 1X 400 Watts fridge for 24 hours equals approximately 2 units. This means ESKOM will charge me R292 per year. Mathematically, by assuming that ESKOM rates will increase by 13% per year every year, then means in 41 years you will have saved R38 000. Which means by installing this kit, you will recover your costs in 41 years.Based on my calculations P= 258.41 exp (0.122 X t), where P is the price of 2 unit of electricity, and t represents the number of years.I think this unit is economical, not viable at this stage. Innovations are required in order to make the system more effective. Please convince me otherwise. Answer:

Is the system SSEG compliant for the City of Cape Town? Does it include brackets to mount the rails on a tiled or corrugated roof? Answer:
Hi Werner. No this system is not SSEG compliant with the City of Cape Town. It does not back feed power and It is designed to operate off-grid and therefore is not subject to embedded generation regulations unless you connect it to the municipal grid. If you're looking for compliant systems you should consider our grid tie offerings (https://www.solar-shop.co.za/32-grid-tie) and our hybrid inverters (https://www.solar-shop.co.za/41-hybrid-inverters). These systems are compliant. Regards Solar Shop Support

Hi. I want to install a system that i can upgrade slowly so as to make it more affordable. I would like to have batteries that I can draw power from first and then when the batteries get low automatically draw from the municipality's grid.Initially, I want power for my lights (maximum 500 watts, if all are on at the same time which they are not but normally 240 watts for 6 hrs a day), 1x plasma TV, 2 x LED TV's, fridge, 2x garage doors, alarm, and electric fencing. Later I would like to increase the system to power 1x washing machine, 1x dryer, 1x dishwasher. Currently I have an electric stove but am thinking of switching either to gas or induction but induction will remain on the municipality's grid. This is for Port Elizabeth. What would be the smallest system that I can get? Please supply a quote.Regards, Benesh Somai Answer:

I am about to place an order on a competitor for a substantial hybrid system but they refuse to guarantee the sustem if I install it myself. It comprises 27 off 335 W thin film panels with 8 off 240 Ah batteries, plus all the required components. This for a domestic residence in Randburg where we intend to install a commercial Aquaponics tunnel. The house faces north with enough roof space for about 30 panels. I am about to start installing a second DB board this week. The above mentioned dispute and thier intransigence is causing me concern. Would you be prepared to quote for this system asap? Dear Sir/MadamI am interested in an off grid solar power system to run alternatively by manually switching between:a) a 1 horse power (.75 kW) 230 V 50 Hz 7.3A Franklin submersible bore hole pump; or b) a 750 W duty rate 210-240 V at 4.8A Speck Aquadrive 1100 pool pump.I don't want battery backup but want to run it from solar power for up to 8 hours a day if available, with an option to use electric power from an AC source or generator when solar power is insufficient .Can you provide me with a quote specifying everything I would need to install an suitable system(DIY) on a cement tile roof about 3 meters from the current distribution board where the pumps are currently connected to the municipal power.I would also like a quote for installing this system at my residence located in Ray Street Wonderboom, Pretoria Answer:
Hi Cas, since you already have AC pumps, you'll be better off with a grid tie solution if you don't want to use batteries. We have sent you a quote. Regards Solar Shop Support

Good day. Id like too run my household 100% on solar power and have enough power too heat a geyser run and a few electrical devices including a alarm system. All lights has been changed too led. What should i do too make it work as i live in a duplex estate. Answer:
Hi Pierre, you need significant roof space for this amount of solar power. Unless you can get the estate together to make the roof or other space for panels available, your solar options are pretty limited. Regards Solar Shop Support.

We live in KZN, in a 5 bedroom house; we wish to go off grit and would like to run the following appliances; 2 geysers, pool pump, borehole pump, hothouse pump for the Hothouse, TV, DSTV stove and oven, kitchen appliances, fridge, kettle washing machine, 5 bedrooms, 2 lounges, 3 bathrooms. We never use all of this at the same time as there are only my wife and I living in the house. We use + - 1400 units electricity per month at present Answer:
Hi Patryk. This kit will fall well short of your requirements. Replacing 1400 Units of electricity usage is a very expensive undertaking. This kit will only produce around 250 Units per month, depending on where you are located. When considering going off-grid it is vital that one optimises the load side before even looking at solar PV. Change the geysers to gas or solar water heating, change all the stoves and cooking to gas, make sure you have energy efficient appliances and lighting. Only then should you look at solar PV. Hi Ben. It does get pretty confusing. In the context of residential solar & storage systems, a hybrid inverter (sometimes referred to as a multi-mode inverter) is an inverter which can simultaneously manage inputs from both solar panels and a battery bank, charging batteries with either solar panels or the electricity grid. Some hybrids (like the Goodwe units we sell on this site) can also export power back through the meter. The Axpert inverters cannot do this. Regards Solar Shop Support

If I install the off-grid system advertised here and since the Axpert converters cannot feed to the grid, is there a way of feeding excess electricity back to the grid without having to replace the inverter such as installing another (hopefully) cheaper converter that is dedicated to feeding excess energy back to the grid only? Regards, BenHi,I am now confused. In your answer to Werner you say: -Hi Werner. No this system is not SSEG compliant with the City of Cape Town.
