More info

If you have a modern version of Excel, you can download our sizing tool here and try out different combinations of load, batteries, panels etc.

Our 5kVA Off Grid kit consists of:

  • 1 x 5kVA Solar Hybrid Inverter (3000W MPPT) (product link)

  • 6 x 275W JA Solar Tier 1 Solar Modules (product link)

  • 4 x Vision 100Ah 12V AGM Sealed Batteries (product link)

  • 50m x 6.0mm Solar Cable

  • DC Switch

  • MC4 Connector kit

  • Mounting Clips and channel (2 x 6m)

Please note that these kits do not include installation.

For those not overly familiar with solar power, this kit can store around 2 Units of electricity in the batteries.

This means that at night when there is no sun, you could watch a 300W TV for about 6.5 hours before the batteries went flat (300W x 6.5 hours = 1950Whrs = 1.95 Units of electricity)

OR

you could run 40 x 5W LED globes for 10 hours (5W x 40 x10 hours = 2000Whrs = 2 Units of electricity)

OR

a 2000W kettle for an hour straight (2000W * 1 hour = 2000Whrs = 2 Units of electricity) *Not sure why you would do that but who knows?*

OR

any combination of the above that adds up to 2 Units.

During the day, the solar panels can produce up to 1,65 kW's in full sunlight (6 x 275W = 1650W). Assuming 5 full "sun hours" in a day you would produce up to 8 units of electricity. The panels will first charge the batteries and after that will add whatever power they can produce to your grid, so you may be able to run off up to 100% solar power during daylight hours, depending on weather conditions.

If you need to do more than the above you need a bigger kit or more batteries. Please contact us and we can do a quote for you.

We are a small household want find out some more about your 5kva kit. Could it cope with running a fridge, stove and geyser at the sametime especially around 17:00. I understand that a washing would have to be run during the day. If the 5kva is small what kit we would require and what that would cost inclusive of installation. If you have payment plans or it is cash. Answer:
Hi Sabelo. It won't be economically feasible to run your geyser or stove with these systems. We always recommend you try to switch to a solar geyser and gas cooking before looking at solar PV for the rest of your appliances. Regards Solar Shop Support.

How do I calculate my electricity consumption 400w light's working for 12 hours ,2 x Bosch Fridge's A++ working for 24 hours TV & decoder's total 800w for 12 hours Wall plug 1500w for 2 hours Inverter should be in grid Answer:
Hi Andries. We have an excel spreadsheet on this page available for download that will help you calculate just that. Your consumption is calculated by multiplying the average power rating of each appliance by the number of hours you intend using it per day. For example, 400w of lights working for 12 hours = 400 x12 = 4800Whrs or 4,8kWhrs. One unit of electricity is 1kWr. Therefore the lights in this example will consumes 4.8 Units per 24 hour period. More about your system the ins and outs of the batteries how often would I need to replace them and if you add extra batteries done you need more panels and then wouldn’t you need a bigger inverter. I have a Gass stove and solar geyser but still have an electric oven it seems like the 5 kva system will be a bit small Answer:
Hi John. The batteries are designed for 2400 cycles at 50% discharge. Therefore if you discharge them 50% every night they will last just over six years, assuming they are operated within temperature spec etc. Please consider downloading our system sizer spreadsheet on this page which will allow you to play around with the system until you get to something that is suitable to you. • Asked by Hein
    on 14/09/2018
Hi. Will this type of system be able to power a domestic heatpump? Rated power consumption is 1.3kW Answer:
Hi Hein, yes it will. The real question is for how long? In good sunlight the panels them selves can power it with no intervention from the batteries or the grid required. In poor weather and at night you will need to rely on the batteries and when they are used up, the grid supply. The batteries on their own (with no solar or grid power help) will only run this heat pump for about an hour and a half before cutting out. Regards Solar Shop Support
  • Asked by Moleki Evans
    on 21/09/2018
Good day Does this mean that 12solar panels and 8battries is 10kva? Answer:
Hi Moleki, in this case the 5kVA refers to the maximum power the inverter is able to deliver. So that limit would remain. Doubling the panels will increase the electricity coming off the panels meaning faster re-charging of the batteries. Doubling the batteries will double the amount of time the system can operate for without any re-charging. Regards Solar Shop Support

i average about 1000kw a month, what system do i to completely go off grid? Answer:
Hi Musa, a very big system is what you need. You're looking at R300k if you want to take your whole house off grid. There are far more cost effective solutions that will get you 95% of the way there depending on what your goal is. Let us know if you would like to discuss other options. Regards Solar Shop Support

I use on average 1000 Units per month, with a maximum consumption of 48 units in a 24 hour day. I want a completely Off-Grid Solution. I live in Mossel Bay. Please provide me with more information and a quote Answer:
Hi Sebastian, 1000kWh is an immense amount of energy for a totally off grid solution to produce consistently. Also, given you're far south, you'll need to compensate for poor solar production in winter. You're looking at R350k at the least for a completely off grid solution. There are far more cost effective solutions that will get you 95% of the way there depending on what your goal is. Let us know if you would like to discuss other options. Regards Solar Shop Support

Hi I have 3 one bedroom flats that need a solar solution as I have tenants who are feeding off one municipal meter. I have installed private prepaid meters in each flat to count the usage in each flat. Each flat has a DB board and a prepaid meter. The tenants use electricity for fridges lights and TVs no geysers. would you be able to setup a solar system into the current so that I can be able to count the usage and distribute the solar power amongst the tenants. Thanks Answer:
Hi, yes this can be done, but using a grid tie system instead. Please email us your location (support@solar-shop.co.za) and we can put something together for you. Regards Solar Shop Support
  • Asked by Lucky
    on 05/10/2018
Solar system (grid) that will power 20 lights, 15 Plugs and gate motor. What will this cost. Answer:
Hi Lucky. How many watts are the lights? How long they need to be on for each day? Also, unfortunately just saying 15 x plugs doesn't help us with sizing your system. The plugs could have a 5W cell phone charger plugged into them or an 8kW coffee maker. Unfortunately these are the realities of sizing a solar PV correctly. If possible, please download the sizing spreadsheet on this page and try working with that. We can assist if you get stuck. Any other way will invariably result in a solution that is unfit for purpose. Another consideration is where in the country are you. This will impact on how much solar power is produced Regards Solar Shop Support
  • Asked by Faeez
    on 05/10/2018
Good day Team,Just a few questions regarding scalability,How easy is it to scale from Off-grid Solar Kit - 3kVA to Off-grid Solar Kit - 5kV and if you want to go bigger in future, Also what setup can generate 5 units per day ? with regards to the Grid Tie setup does it only kick in once all ones electricity is up or can we first use the solar until all the batteries is flat then use our electricity units ?Kind regards Faeez Answer:
Hi Faeez. A simple ballpark way of guesstimating units per day produced is to take the total solar panel power and multiply it by a "sun hours" factor of between 4 - 5. This will give you the units per day correctly installed panels can produce on average over a year. For example this 5kVA kit comes with 6 x 275Wp panels = 1,65kW x 5 sun hours = 8.25kWhr (or units) per day. The "sun hours figure will vary according to where in the country you reside. A grid tie system works a little differently. It is designed to simply add additional power to your existing household grid. If the household is using less or the same power as the grid tie system is producing it will use no municipal power. If it is using more than the solar system is producing, it will use all the solar power and then supplement the difference with grid supplied power. Grid tie systems don't and can't use batteries. They are no good for back up use when the grid is down, they are designed primarily to save money on electricity. Regards Solar Shop Support

Hi, I have been considering making an investmest in a solar electric power system. My current usage per day is 30 units. I have a solar geyser installed already and it works well. I have pool pump that runs 8 hours daily. What will be my options of size to buy. I want to buy half my monthly consumption of 400 units and produce the rest Answer:
Hi Sagie. If you're looking at this from a purely cost saving point of view, you're going to be much better off with a grid tie kit. Our 3kW kit will produce around 400 - 450 Units per month on average depending on where in the country you are. Hi Eddie, Yes it is possible to charge the batteries via a generator. The Axpert inverters don't go higher than 5kW but they can be added together to increase power output. i.e. 2 x 5KW paralleled will give you your 10kW. I am really interested in a system that still uses Escom power (automatically switches/draws from Escom), but first utilizes the power generated by solar panels during the day, when I use the most of my power.I have monitored the use in my house and seldom go above 4Kw/hr during the day. Geyser is a heatpump and then it is the 1.1Kw swimming pool pump that uses the daily consumption. There are 5 fridges/freezers in the house, but they could all sleep overnight (except one).I have 2 x 4-battery UPS' driving PCs, garage doors, alarm system and TV with emergency lights. So, no need for additional batteries. In essence, I would need a system that could produce the bulk of my daily use up to 4 or 5KW. Answer:
Hi Christo. What is your electricity use in units per month? Where in the country are you located? Regards Solar Shop Support.

Hi, What size system and at what cost will it take to run a 25kva homestead completely off grid. assuming the electricity bill is around R5000 per month how long will it take to pay off? would you be able to run solar and wind concurrently? Answer:
Hi Mark, would need to know what area you're in, but realistically if you want enough solar power to produce and store +- 3000 Units of electricity per month, you're looking well North of 350k. Good "off grid" solar design is all about load planning and optimising, so that after a lengthy consultative process, you've cut that figure in half perhaps. Effective totally off-grid solar must be approached from a load management perspective to be worthwhile. Regards Solar Shop Support

LED Generally in the evening 10 lights mostly 20W LED Answer:
Hi Herman, we have sent you a quote although we don't recommend running a geyser or electrical pool heating on solar PV. It's simply not cost effective. Rather use a solar geyser. Regards Solar Shop Support

On this kit, if I replace the solar panels with a 330w solar panels, replace the batteries with 120ah batteries, and axpert inverter MKS 5K. How much power output will I get on a sunny day from the panels and from the batteries? And how will this cost? Answer:
Hi Absolom. How much power you get on an average day will depend on where in the country you are and the time of year. A useful rule of thumb is to multiply your total panel power by 4 to 5 to get a very rough average. So if you had 6 x 330W panels, you may average around 330x 6 x 5 = 9,900Whrs or about 10 Units per day. Regards Solar Shop Support

I plan to have 2x3 solar panels at very different angles. Do you have an inverter with mppt for two strings? Alternatively, do you have an inverter which one can combine with smart solar modules each having their own power optimizer (like theones from SolarEdge)? Answer:
Hi Wolfgang. There is an Axpert inverter that has dual MPPT's. We don't have it on the site as it's not a big seller, but we can send you a quote if you'd like. Regards Solar Shop Support

How much power do I need for two freezers Answer:
Hi Eric, we'll send you a quote. As a side note it's almost impossible to remotely quantify a freezer or fridges electricity use, This is due to unknown external factors such as age of the fridge, condition of rubber seals, temperature of the area in which the fridge is located, how full it is, how often it is opened and closed, etc. The only way to accurately determine this is to put a power monitor on it for a couple of weeks. Even then power consumption will vary with seasonal changes. Regards Solar Shop Support

Can I mix batteries with different ratings or do they have to be all the same e.g. 105Ah? Answer:
Hi there, no it's never recommended, the worst batteries will pull the others down to their level of performance and the whole array won't get charged properly, resulting in premature battery failure. Regards Solar Shop Support

Hi JJ, there is no 15kVA inverter in this range. You would need to buy 3 x 5kVA inverters and parallel them together. Prices for our 5kVA inverters are here: https://www.solar-shop.co.za/70-axpert-inverters. Regards Solar Shop Support

I am calling from Bayswater suburb in Bloemfontein. My house is so cold during winter. Even though I have underfloor heating system, I am afraid of electricity bill and therefore do not use it at all. How can solar system assist me? I use heat pump to heat up the water. Can these items I have be connected to solar system and also warm up my house during winter?Regards. Answer:
Hi Ngwako. An off-grid kit with batteries seldom works out significantly cheaper than Eskom. What you need is a grid tie system (no batteries) to cut your bill. Regards Solar Shop Support

Can you build me a kit that I can use to just connect the 3 lights to. Something like a plug and play. I dont need batteries as I just want to power the lights directly with the solar panels in day time. I have a separate set of lights that I will use in the evenings. If you can quote me with something for this I will appreciate it. Answer:

    1. Is this system expandable? (adding a second system to it at a later time). 2. Do you deliver in the Free State? (Goldfields) 3. Is the batteries chargeable with RAW power during cloudy/rainy days? 4. Are there any hidden costs? 5. What is the lifecycle of these batteries? Answer:
Hi Cobus 1) Yes, you can parallel up to 6 systems together 2) Yes, to street addresses 3) You can use a generator to charge the batteries via the inverters built-in charger if need be. 4) No, not as far as we are aware. Everything up to the AC utput is supplied. From the AC out you're on your own. 5) 1200 cycles @ 50% DOD. If you want longer we can supply Li-ion batteries with 4500 cycles @ 80% DOD. Hi, We stay on a farm and use about 1250kwh per month. We average a cost of unit of R3.10 per kWh . I would like to go of the grid, this means cancelling with Eskom. We do have another Eskom connection but at a distance. Will look at overhead open cabling as a backup if required. Need. To get assistance from somewhere on cable sizing etc plus minus 650meters. We also have a generator as backup. I am unable to do excel spread sheet. Having difficulty downloading excel on to my IPad. We have five households connected here collectively the use is the 1250kwh per month. Including three geysers. All are on gas stoves. Little issues like going of electric kettles can be adapted. I think gas heating is more cost effective than electric? The three geysers are mostly off to reduce electricity cost mostly from affordability of two tenants (on private pay as you go). What would be the best to convert the geysers a solar panel with a Dc element? Solar heating or heat pumps? Please advise. A little guessing on my side I would say I need the 330w solar panels between 8 to 10. The solars panels do they a supporting frame and at what is the optimum angle facing north? The battery bank would need to be at least double to 8 off. The 5kva inverter I do not understand as a of 3000kva is mentioned. I would think I need 5kva as load. Please explain what happens when batteries are being charged, is there no power available? Would I be able to charge the batteries with my generator? Can half the batteries be halved during charging while other half being charged? How long does it take to charge the batteries? The borehole pump 3kw is three phase and I also have three phase machines in my workshop. It would appears a single the three phase converter is most practice for workshop and pump. It would appear I have lots of questions but I am serious about going of the grid. Glenn Answer:
Hi Glenn, these issues are too complex to address in this forum. I would suggest you let us know where you are so we can put you in touch with someone in your area who can discuss this with you in depth. Regards Solar Shop Support
