Solar PV Needs Analysis

 

Lithium-ion batteries have the advantage over traditional lead acid in that they can be cycled many times more and can be discharged deeper while maintaining a decent battery life.

If you're serious about going solar, then lithium-ion is the only way to go.

Please see the pack content below for a breakdown of the components included in this kit.

For those not overly familiar with solar power, this kit can store around 3.6 Units of electricity in the batteries.

This means that at night when there is no sun, you could watch a 200W TV for about 18 hours before the batteries went flat (200W x 18 hours = 3600Whrs = 3.6 Units of electricity)

OR

you could run 72 x 5W LED globes for 10 hours (5W x 80 x 10 hours = 3600Whrs = 3.6 Units of electricity)

OR

a 2000W kettle for an 1.8 hours straight (2000W * 1.8 hour = 3600Whrs = 3.6 Units of electricity) *Not sure why you would do that but who knows?*

OR

any combination of the above that adds up to 4 Units.

During the day, the solar panels can produce up to 4 kW's in full sunlight (8 x 500W = 4kW). Assuming 5 full "sun hours" in a day, you would produce up to 20 units of electricity. The panels will first charge the batteries and after that will add whatever power they can produce to your grid, so you may be able to run off up to 100% solar power during daylight hours, depending on weather conditions. At night, the batteries will discharge until they reach a defined, pre-set level.

Question

If using this system as an off grid with a generator input to inverter instead of eskom, (for those cloudy days) would a 3kv generator be sufficient? Rated 2.3kw, does the generator input to inverter have to be pure sine wave?

Answer

Hi Russell. A 3kW generator is sufficient to charge the batteries in a couple of hours. The input voltage of the inverter is very wide (170Vac - 280Vac). Standard generators automatically produce a pure sine wave (although how "clean" each specific one is we can't say).

Hi, if I plan to build up this kit, can I start with the inverter and one battery? I will use grit power to charge the battery through the inverter to provide back up power during load shedding. I'm planing on adding the PV panels and more batteries as I'm expanding the system in future. Can this be done, one inverter, one battery to start with having a backup when its load shedding. Please could you clarify what type of inverter is included in this kit: Will this inverter allow for the PV electricity to be fed back in to the municipality grid, and, if so, why is the cost of this kit one significantly cheaper than the other Kodak hybrid inverters that are on your site. Also, does the kit come with a comprehensive installation manual written in good English (not badly translated Chinese!) as I would want to self install. I've not installed a PV system before but have self-built houses and self installed complete domestic wiring systems before and understand the fundamentals of electricity.Regards Paul (I live in WIndhoek, Namibia).

Hi Paul. The inverter is the one indicated just above these questions, namely the Kodak MKSII. You cannot back feed the grid with this inverter as it is not bi-directional. The instruction booklet is a good one and we are available for support during office hours during installation. Electrical installation needs to be done by a licenced wireman.

Hi, I see in the datasheet that the inverter lists max PV array open voltage as 450VDC, the datasheet from the sharp 330w panels state an open voltage of 45.96V. So am I correct in saying that for this kit: the most efficient and safest installation would be to have 9 panels in series, with 1 panel in parallel, or was the intention to have 10 in series then rely on tolerances?

Hi Hilton, we don't sell modified sine wave inverters, only pure sine wave. The inverter can output a max of 5kW at any moment in time. You can connect anything that doesn't exceed that. The batteries and the panels will determine HOW LONG you can run the load for.

Hi Michael, each battery can accept a maximum charge of 25Adc (x 50V) = 1250W, therefore at max solar charging you could recharge them in 2 hours (to 95% say)

You can also charge them with grid power depending on how you set the inverter up.

Hi Shaun. The inverter will only give 5kW output, correct. You can have an electrician split the board so that you don't exceed the backup output (e.g. take the geysers and aircons off the backup). Or you can parallel two or more inverters together to get more output power.

Hi David. 90% of the job is physically fixing the panels to the roof, running the cable to the inverter and hanging the inverter on the wall. The minor part is connecting the system to your DB which must be done by a qualified electrician.

It's because it is the hardware platform that houses an aftermarket software product that interfaces between the inverter and the Battery Management System on the Pylontech (since the Axpert's cannot communicate natively with the Li-ion batteries).
